“I fear the future.”

Written by chaplain on 25 November, 2013. Posted in Uncategorized

As a chaplain I hear this a lot. It comes from the hearts of people often in turmoil and change. It could be a change in their work or home life or in the face of loss through a death.

I often ask these people what kind of support network they have to lean on in these times of fear and turmoil. I often hear “I have none, and I don’t really trust others or let them get to close.  I am cop!” This is one of the side affects of police work. It can make your heart hard as a stone. You will not let anyone know the fears that are deep within. It’s a sign of weakness I am told! Well if that’s what you believe you’re heading for even more fear and often loneliness. You need others! Your not an island but are made for relationship.

These issues we all face at different times in life.  But UK police officers and staff are in a tornado of change and fear of the future. Is there hope and a way to cope through it? Yes! A big one at that! Stay engaged with those you love and are close to and talk your way through it. Don’t bottle it up and wait for it to explode! It most often damages those who are close to you. You don’t want that!

You will need your family, fun and your faith! These things make a vast difference in the eye of the storm!

Now I can hear those hardened officers laughing at me even suggesting such things! The crazy emotional American at it again! I hear their comments of….”Steve, I don’t even know how to talk to my partner anymore!”

Well, try this…

Some questions to ask your mate, partner, spouse and them to ask you.

  1. What’ really going on inside you right now? Describe it.
  2. What does it make you want to do? Run, cry or maybe jump for joy?
  3. Do you feel alone or accepted and loved by me?
  4. Do you want me to just emotionally feel these issues or do you want me to try to fix them? (Officers are great fixers but not too good at feeling.)
  5. Do you feel I am emotionally open with you?
  6. Is this issue bringing up past pain that’s not been healed?
  7. Do you believe I will stick with you no matter what lies a head?
  8. Do you find it difficult to trust others? Why?
  9. I believe and trust in you. Do you believe and trust me?
  10. What do you think our relationship needs most?

Don’t let your fears rob you of your relationships. Offload before you explode!
